Back in 2015 I was traveling through Utah and Colorado largely on US Route 50. After leaving Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park I was heading east on US 50 along the Cimarron River when I came across the abandoned community of Cimarron in Montrose County.
I thought Cimarron was founded as a Railing Siding of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and clearly present roughly on the corridor US 50 now occupies in 1883. 1883 is also the year Montrose County was formed with Montrose as the County Seat.
1883 Map of Colorado
Cimarron is still next to the rails of the Southern Pacific which happens to run just to the south of US 50. There isn't much left of the community aside from an abandoned hotel, general store, and a Sinclair station overrun with abandoned vehicles. The community has a real 1960s/70s feel to it especially with the abandoned cars and pay phone.
