Back in 2015 I was traveling through the northern Green Swamp on Florida State Road 471 to find the remains of Withacoochee Army Airfield. At County Route 788 there is a small dirt road east of Clay Sink and FL 471 which heads to a clearing which was Withacoochee Army Airfield.
Withlacoochee Army Airfield was constructed in 1942 and was a sub-command of the Orlando Army Airfield. Withlacoochee Army Airfield was an auxiliary air strip for the Bushnell and Zephr Hills Army Airfields. Chemical Weapons testing took place with personnel from the Dugway Proving Ground in 1943. Unlike most of Orlando Army Airfield sub-commands the Withlacoochee Army Airfield was never paved. The Withlacoochee Army Airfield was abandoned in 1945 and the Green Swamp grew back over what was once an active military post.
