In 2012 I was traveling through US 380 in rural Lincoln County heading east towards Ruidoso which crosses the Carrizozo Malpais.
The photo above is of Little Black Peak the source of the lave flow in the Carrizozo Malpais. The Carrizozo Malpais is thought to have been an active lava flow as recently as 700 years ago. The lava flow of the Carrizozo Malpais is about 40 miles long north/south through the Tulare Basin almost reaching White Sands National Monument.
