Construction for another 6.2 miles of what will become I-74 in North Carolina may be approved on Thursday in Raleigh. The section will run from Business I-85 to Spencer Road just east of Archdale. There were six bids placed for the $104 million project with Blythe Construction in Charlotte being the apparent low bidder.
The project was to be awarded in 2004 and then again last fall. Construction is expected to take four years. The highway will be signed "Future I-74" upon completion, but it is expected to become a full-fledged Interstate when the freeway is completed to US 220 (I-73/74) north of Asheboro.
The Spencer Road to US 220 section of the freeway is expected to go out to bid next year.
