Interstate 495 to be signed in North Carolina sometime soon

NCDOT officially announced today that US 64 between Interstate 440 in Raleigh and Interstate 95 in Rocky Mount has been approved by the FHWA to be signed as Interstate 495. The section of US 64 between I-440 (Exit 419) and I-540 (Exit 423) will be signed as Interstate 495.  The remainder of US 64 (and US 264 until Zebulon) from Exit 423 to I-95 (Exit 464) will be signed as Future I-495. No word currently on when either style of the I-495 signs will be posted along US 64.  Nor is there specific plans on when projects to upgrade the US 64 freeway from Rolesville Road (Exit 430) to I-95 will occur. Improvements to inside and outside shoulders on the route east of Exit 430 along with upgrades to the Nashville bypass will be necessary for the full Interstate designation to be signed along the rest of the route.  NCDOT has unfunded plans to widen the US 64/264 freeway from Rolesville Road to the US 264 East split (Exit 436) to six lanes.  It is possible that the Interstate designatio

A Thanksgiving Boston Sign Feast

I took advantage of the very light Thanksgiving morning traffic into and around Boston to do some more 'research' into the new route signage that has been showing up around the city which MassDOT says is the work of an 'unknown organization.' My 1 1/2 hour trip took me up MA 3 to I-93 North to the Mass Ave exit, all at or above (slightly, of course) the legal speed limit. Here's signage for traffic heading from Mass Ave toward I-93 North and the Mass Pike: I was most interested in the 3 sign stack for North I-93/US 1/MA 3 because this will be similar, according to the plans, to the route marker signage, with the exception of the arrow, that is to appear along the SE Expressway at the conclusion of the current sign replacement project (assuming it is ever complete). I took a left toward Mass Ave and some interesting route signs appeared: Here are more mysterious MA 2A signs. Based on the signage it would appear the I-93 on-ramp and Melnea Cass Blvd intersection

I-95 Signage Update and More

I took a road trip on Saturday (10/26) to attend the Fall Meeting of the New England Archivists professional association being held at Amherst College. The trip took me along the lower half of the '128 Belt' (I-93 and I-95) from Braintree to the Mass Pike West to I-91in Springfield and north from there to MA 9 to Amherst. I took the opportunity to make note, and take some photos, on progress of signage projects I saw along the way. A. I-93 Braintree to Randolph No progress here, little done in the last month. Hopefully work done on the SE Expressway stretch, but did not have time to check that area. The only thing going on was pavement work, fortunately, on I-93/US 1 North which closed down 2 lanes and backed up traffic in the morning back to I-95 (and was still going on when I returned that night, unfortunately). B. I-95 Add-A-Lane Project, Dedham to Needham No signage changes along the active construction zone northbound, but work has progressed near the MA 109 intercha
