From my twitter feed today:
So what does or could this mean? A flex device that allows you to turn on/off the transponder if you have over a certain amount of passengers in your car - like Virginia has? Additional tolling options or compatibility? Gogoraleigh followed up with one additional tweet.
If the turnpike is looking at ways to improve the payment cycle on non-transponder payments could they be looking at connectivity to Paypal or Venmo? I've asked gogoraleigh to see if they could provide any more details. If they respond, I'll update this post. Otherwise, I'll keep my eye out for any NC Turnpike payment updates.
Western Wake Turnpike/540 making big changes to billing/devices. May want to wait 'til Sept to "buy" that transponder ;) #littleBirdie— gogoraleigh (@gogoraleigh) July 7, 2017

Couple of Turnpike numbers: 60% use transponders, 40% are OCRd (by a human). Of non-transponder customers, avg total pmt time is ~25days.— gogoraleigh (@gogoraleigh) July 7, 2017
