Earlier this summer, my family took a trip to Nashville, Tennessee, and I took a photo of my oldest son, Colton, reading a Tennessee state map as he wanted to know where we were and how far we were to Nashville. And where some of the photos on the map were located - and of course if we could go there.
So a few weeks later when we were visiting my parents, my mother - a former Middle School English teacher - had a surprise for Colton. They had seen on facebook the photo of Colton with a map on his lap and had to get this item. It was a book titled "There's a Map on My Lap!" by Tish Rabe. The book is patterned in the style of Dr. Seuss and features the Cat in The Hat.
This is really a fun book to read with kids and also teaches various features about maps. The book in a fun and entertaining way tells you what a cartographer is and what one does. Teaches longitude and latitude. Explains a legend and how to measure distance from scale among many other things.
The book is 41 pages long and is great to read to your kids or for an early reader to learn about maps. There is even a glossary, index, and suggestions for further reading. Needless to say that it has been read a few times to both of my children at bedtime since we received the book!
