This previous month I drove what was California State Route 224 from US 101/CA 1 south to Carpinteria State Beach. CA 224 was a 1 mile State Highway which was routed from US 101/CA 1 through Carpinteria to Carpinteria State Beach.  The route of CA 224 followed Casitas Pass Road, Carptineria Avenue and Palm Avenue to the State Beach Gate. The route that became CA 224 dates back to the creation of Legislative Route 152 which was added to the State Highway System in 1933 according to CAhighways.org.  In it's original configuration LRN 152 simply connected from US 101/LRN 2 on Carpinteria Avenue south to Carpinteria State Beach.  The earliest route of LRN 152 can be seen on the 1935 California Division of Highways Map of Santa Barbara County. During the 1964 Renumbering CA 224 was assigned to LRN 152.  This change can be seen on the 1964 State Highway Map. This past month I drove several short State Highways in the Santa Barbara Area including California State Route 144. The present route of CA 144 is located within the City of Santa Barbara.  Current CA 144 is approximately 1.1 miles between Salinas Street north via Sycamore Canyon Road to CA 192. The present route of CA 144 was added to the State Highway System in 1933 as a spur of Legislative Route 80 according to CAhighways.org.   The spur of LRN 80 ran from CA 150 south via; Sycamore Canyon Road and Salinas Street to US 101/LRN 2.  The spur of LRN 80 can be seen on the 1935 California Division of Highways Map of Santa Barbara County . During the 1964 State Highway Renumbering the spur of LRN 80 was reassigned as CA 144.  The route of CA 144 was so small in scale that it often wasn't displayed on State Highway Maps.  One of the few State Highway Map editions to clearly show CA 144 was in 2005.   The 2005 State Highway Map shows CA 144 running from US 101/CA 1 via;

This past month I visited the Santa Barbara Area and drove the many short State Highways located there.  The shortest and the strangest is the 0.081 mile California State Route 225. As noted above CA 225 is presently only 0.081 miles in length and is located completely on Castillo Street in Santa Barbara between Montecito Street and US 101/CA 1.  Fortunately the Caltrans Post Mile Tool illustrates that CA 225 still exists despite almost being relinquished to death. At present moment CA 225 is the shortest State Highway in California.  By the definition of actual field mileage the following State Highways are the five shortest in California: 1.  CA 225 at 0.081 miles 2.  CA 275 at 0.14 miles 3.  CA 283 at 0.36 miles 4.  CA 77 at 0.40 miles  5.  CA 153/CA 265 at 0.50 miles each The origin of CA 225 was back in 1933 when Legislative Route 150 was added to the State Highway system as a loop of US 101/LRN 2 between Santa Barbara east to near Montecito according to CAhig
